Colchester Area Guide

Still considered to be one the of country’s major ‘boom towns’, Colchester is an ever expanding and evolving part of Essex. What Colchester has to offer from a property perspective is a fantastic array of new developments, built to exacting standards and creating mini communities all across the town. Investment in Colchester has been fantastic, with quality housing continuously being built to keep up with demand.

The history of the town is something that is rarely forgotten, despite the high rates of development. With ruins of the Roman Wall that used to surround the Camulodunum settlement still very much evident, and a £4.2m investment in the Colchester Castle Museum, there is evidence all around that Colchester continues to embrace its heritage as the country’s ‘Oldest Recorded Town’.

Colchester also focusses on the present too, with what many describe as a ‘cultural hub’ in its centre, thanks in part to the £24m Firstsite Art Gallery. Colchester Zoo is of course also renowned for its fantastic facilities and is a huge tourist attraction, as is the Mercury Theatre for its shows. If it is shopping you’re after though, there is the Tollgate Shopping Village on the outskirts, as well as a Park and Ride system that can transport you quickly into the Town Centre itself. Prefer to embrace nature? Then both the Colchester Castle Park and Highwood’s Country Park are Green Flag Award winning too, with community events held throughout the year and lush greenery to enjoy.

With Primary and Secondary schools spread widely across the Town, Colchester is also a great place for families to live. The Sixth Form College and Institute are also great examples of further education, and the University of Essex increases the diversity of the town with its global student base. The access offered by both a direct line to London Liverpool Street in just 50 minutes, and the A12 giving you a direct route to the M25 and towns in the South of Essex, makes Colchester great for commuters, as well as those looking to work locally.
